Guide to children's shoes

Buying children's shoes can sometimes feel overwhelming due to all the different factors you need to take into consideration. That's why we have put together a guide to help you make the right choice. To avoid limiting your child's natural foot mobility, it is important to choose shoes that are comfortable, i.e. made from soft, flexible, and breathable materials that allow the shoe to adapt to the natural shape of the foot.

Made from natural materials

Bisgaard children's shoes are made from real leather, which makes them soft, durable and comfortable. Leather is a supple natural material that adapts and conforms to the shape of the foot over time which allows the foot to develop naturally. It is important to choose a pair of shoes that provides a healthy internal climate for the feet that allows the skin to breathe. The soles follow the natural movements of the foot. That is why our soles are made from natural rubber, that is not only durable but also naturally soft and flexible.

A good fit

To ensure good support and mobility, especially for very young children, a good fit is essential. Our closures, soles, shaft height, materials and linings help provide a snug fit that prevents the foot from gliding around inside the shoe. A pair of bisgaard shoes can be comfortably worn over many hours of fun and play.

Shoe care

With proper care, you can make your leather shoes last a long time. Bisgaard shoes should regularly be cared for to preserve the suppleness and great look of the leather. It is important to permeate the shoes from the beginning and at regular intervals. This keeps off dirt and ensures that the outside of the shoes are not worn down by the elements any more than necessary. You can care for your leather footwear with beeswax spray, which is easy to apply in the right amounts and helps preserve the suppleness of the material. Shoe polish (either neutral or in theappropriate color) can also help keep the shoes' color from fading.

If the shoes are made from suede, a liquid shoe polish can help liven up the color. For suede shoes, we recommend a suede brush that can brush the small hairs up again. These measure can also have a waterproofing effect on the shoes, which helps keep feet dry.

Room for growth

Measure the length of your child's foot while they're standing upright. Be sure to measure both feet, as their feet may be different lengths. Start by standing your child up against a wall with their weight evenly distributed between both feet. Place their heel against the wall and a book on the floor so that it is touching their longest toe. Then measure both feet in centimeters from the heel on the wall to the longest toe against the book.

To help you choose the best fit for your little ones, we have separate size guides per shoe here at Bisgaard where you can see what size corresponds to your child's foot length in centimeters. For example, the size guide for our sandals are different to our boots.
