Shoe Care - Kids
To get your bisgaard shoes to last season after season, we recommend that you care for and maintain the footwear the right way. Below we have included information based on what type of footwear you have.
A sustainable choice - take care, buy less
The leather used for our slippers are soft, flexible and lighter than our other leathers. Because of this you need to take extra care. Wipe or spot the leather with lukewarm or cold water to remove dirt or imperfections, and air dry naturally. The leather slipper is produced in genuine leather, which is breathable and ensures good climate for the feet - even if the slipper is worn for an entire day.
For the most part, wool is self-cleaning. It contains lanolin, which is a fat substance from the sheep, which is also used in soap. Lanolin protects the wool fibers and acts as a self-cleaner when the wool is moist. However, if substances are spilled on the shoes, we strongly suggest that you do not put them in the washing machine or dryer. You can dab the slippers with lukewarm water and detergent to remove stubborn stains. The wool slipper is produced in natural wool, which is breathable and ensures good climate for the feet - even if the slipper is worn for an entire day.
Our cotton slippers are made from natural and breathable material. To clean, you can hand wash in cold or warm (never hot) water with little detergent, and let soak for 10mins. Make sure to rinse the slippers well and mould them back to shape before you let them air dry naturally. The cotton slipper is produced in organic cotton, which is breathable and ensures good climate for the feet - even if the slipper is worn for an entire day.
Our natural rubber is a strong material that contains essential oils that will disappear as time goes on. Maintenance of the boots is important to prevent the rubber from drying out, losing its color, or cracking. The oils make the rubber soft and flexible and will increase its durability. Wash the boots in water and dry them before permeating them with special oils using a soft cloth. Rubber boots should be regularly cleaned with water, checked for sand and dirt, and allowed to dry naturally. We recommend using products that do not contain silicone. You can even use household oils such as olive or coconut oil to care for your rain boots.
If the inside of your rubber boot has gotten wet, dry them only by natural heat - do not put the boots on a radiator or heating vent, as it may cause them to dry out and crack. Additionally, you can remove the insole to dry separately. Avoid putting the boots in indirect sunlight for too long a time, as it can also dry out the rubber and fade the color of the boots. We recommend placing the rubber boots in a dry, dark and cool place.

Neoprene rubber boots are easy to clean and maintain. They should be cleaned after use with a little water and a cloth. The sole can be cleaned with a soft brush. The rubber should be regularly treated with oil - use e.g. an ordinary olive oil. An oil treatment will keep the rubber flexible and pliable, and prevents it from drying out. Apply the oil carefully and avoid hitting the neoprene as the oil may stain it.
If the rubber boots have become wet inside, they must be dried by natural heat - do not put the boots on a radiator or heating vent, as it may cause the boots to dry out and crack. Also, avoid putting the boots in direct sunlight for too long a time, as it can also dry out the rubber and fade the color of the boots. Over time leather can lose its shine, but with the right care, you can make leather look and feel new again. It is important to take care of your winter boots to make them as weather resistant as possible.
The first step in the care process is to properly clean the leather. It is important that you use a cleaner designed for leather. We suggest that before purchasing any cleaning products for your leather goods, you read the instructions, so you are sure that it can be used for the material. After cleaning, the leather must dry before you continue. A dry surface ensures that the rest of the care process is effective. You should not let the winter boots dry in an incubator or too close to a hot radiator as it can dry out the leather and may lead to cracks. Additionally, do not let the boots dry directly in the sun as it may bleach and dry out the leather. We recommend normal room temperature, around 20 degrees, as a good condition to dry the boots.
For the care of the boots, we recommend that you use a shoe creme or lotion, as it is easy to apply with a cotton cloth and helps preserve the leather's elasticity and exclusive appearance. When using a shoe cream, massage small amounts of the cream into the boots in a circular motion. This gives an even distribution of the product and a smoother result.
New shoes should always be permeated with a sealant before putting them to use. Permeation has a water-repellent effect and helps ward off dirt, protecting the exterior of the footwear. It is important to seal your leather and suede footwear regularly to maintain the protective coating. Always clean your footwear with a damp cloth prior to permeation to avoid the sealant not sticking. We recommend permeating leather and suede footwear with 3 thin coats instead of a single thick coat.
If your boots have faded, you can use a shoe color to bring some brightness and life back to them. Apply with a cotton cloth in small amounts to get the color even throughout the boot.
Leather is generally a very durable material, but your child's winter boots can last even longer with a bit of additional care. For the care of the boots, we recommend that you use a shoe creme or lotion, as it is easy to apply with a cotton cloth and helps preserve the leather's elasticity and exclusive appearance. If you choose to do this, to help the boots remain durable, you must give them time to dry.
Shoe polish (either neutral or in a color matching that of the boots) can also be used to help restore the appearance of the boots. TEX membrane boots should be cared for in the same way. It is important to use a permeating product that is free from silicone. Silicone can block the TEX membrane's pores that the boots rely on for their breathability and good internal climate. There are permeating products that are particularly suited for shoes and boots with TEX membranes. If the boots become wet, let them dry in a natural way. You should never place wet boots close to a heater because it might damage the TEX membrane and dry out the leather.

The Spire collection requires special care to maintain its natural look. The sustainable shell and lining of our Spire range will will change over time. Due to the sustainable nature of the shoes, they should be cared for with natural products, especially non-silicone based products. You should keep the shoes away from intense heat sources like a fireplace or radiator, as this could stain and crack the leather.
Suede shoes can slightly lose their color over time, but fortunately there's an easy fix for this. Just as with leather footwear, the important first step is to remove any dirt and grime from your suede shoes using a damp cloth. Next, you can apply either a neutral or colored liquid shoe polish. We also recommend the use of a suede brush to brush the little hairs on the suede back into an upright position again and to remove any stains or dents. With the right care routine, you can keep suede footwear looking great and significantly extend its life.
Due to its shiny nature, patent leather needs special care to uphold its signature look. Firstly, wipe the surface of the shoe with a damp cloth and a bit of soap (never a brush or it could crack the glossy finish. Then, immediately buff with a dry soft cloth until you are happy with the shine. We suggest using a silcone free leather dye to hide any scuffs and wear on the soles.
At Bisgaard, we have sneakers made from leather, suede and textile with natural rubber soles. To clean we reccomend using a dry brush to remove dirt from the shell and sole using a dry, soft-bristled shoe brush. If you don't have a shoe brush, an older toothbrush that has has the brisles worn down will work just as well. Mix warm water with a small amount of mild laundry detergent to make a mild wash solution. To wash the laces, remove them from the shoe. Then apply a small amount of the mild cleaning solution, massage the laces, rinse, then dry with a soft cloth. Next, to wash soles, apply the mild solution to a soft-bristled brush and brush the sole. Dry with a soft cloth.Lastly, use the mild solution and a soft-bristled brush or a soft cloth to clean the upper shell. Then use a dry microfiber towel or soft cloth to blot and lift as much soapy moisture and dirt as possible. Repeat if necessary. Air dry at room temperature.

Velcro: One of the quickest and easiest ways to bring velcro back to life is with a toothbrush. Firstly, lay the hook and loop fasteners flat and then brush them with short, hard strokes to remove any debris. To clean further, wipe them down with boiling water to sterilise them.
